I’ve been to this brewery a couple times on previous visits to Columbia, Missouri, and had decent experiences with their Pale Ale and their Nut Brown Ale. However, It’s been a couple years since I been back here and I wasn’t too impressed with the barley wine I just had. The milk stout looked interesting and was served on a nitro tap, although, I found out from the bartender that it was just a tap and not actually served on Nitro. I still have to limit my alcohol intake while I’m on medications following my heart surgery, so, I decided to order only a half pint of this beer.
Location: On tap and served in a half pint glass at Broadway Brewery in Columbia, MO.
Numbers: No numbers posted, so I’m guessing: ~4% ABV, ~ 140 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s Very black in color, and I could barely see any light through it when I tried to look through it. The tan colored head was very thick, and fell to Just a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass after a few minutes. The aroma was light, but I could pick up on some roast the coffee like notes.
Taste & Feel: The body was very light, and the mouthfeel was fairly watery. The flavor up front was lightly sweet with roasty notes. The roasty flavors grew throughout, becoming somewhat bitter and coffee-like in the finish. It was joined by some light earthy hop bitterness in the background. The coffee flavors lasted briefly in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This was a lighter bodied beer, but it had a good amount of roasty coffee flavors. Therefore, I might pair it with a rich chocolate dessert, as the flavors in the beer would mix nicely and the lightness would help wash down the richness.
Overall Impression: I was initially excited to try this because it looked (by the tap) that it was on Nitro. Although it wasn’t, the tap did seem to help the creaminess of this otherwise watery beer. I was surprised the lactose in the milk stout didn’t help the body or mouthfeel more, and it seems like it must be very light in alcohol. Overall, it had a bit more roastiness and bitter coffee flavors than I was expecting, but it was very drinkable. I wish I had more time here to try a few more of their beers, but my experience today (with this and the barleywine) didn’t impress me much.
