We finished our meal at The J. Clyde in Birmingham, Alabama, and, after having local brews from Good People Brewing and Back Forty Beer Co., I thought I’d have one more local beer to finish off the evening.
According to the brewery description, “This summer seasonal is a medium gravity beer with a complex character. We combine two types of European malts along with a blend of noble European and American hops. The beer is light and refreshing, but also derives hints of spice from the French yeast, which leaves behind a crisp dryness that allows the maltiness and the flower-like hops to shine.”
Location: Enjoyed this in a Duvel style tulip glass at The J. Clyde in Birmingham, Alabama
Numbers: 6.7% ABV, ~ 189 Calories
Ingredients: 2 types of European malts, noble European hops, American hops, and French yeast.
Appearance & Aroma: It was very clear and had a bright golden color. There was a thin, maybe quarter inch thick, bright white, foamy head. There was a light lemon and Belgian-like peppery aroma to it.
Taste & Feel: The body was light and the mouthfeel was smooth with just a bit of crispness. There was a light, slightly bready, lemon-like sweetness up front, followed by a bit of pepper and earthy Belgian spiciness in the middle. It finished slightly dry, crisp and clean, leaving just a bit of lemon and pepper flavors in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This was very nice by itself as a dessert beer on a hot summer night. However, the lemon-citrus and spicy peppery flavors would go perfectly with a lemon-pepper spiced steak. The lightness of the beer would help to wash down the thick steak, and the flavors in the beer would add to the spices on the steak.
Overall Impression: I was glad to have the opportunity to try a local brew when down in Birmingham, Alabama for work. On a hot summer night, following two other local brews and a big burger, this beer was perfect. It was smooth, yet crisp with just the right amount of a classic saison lemony-citrus and peppery spiciness. I found it to be tremendously drinkable and really, really liked it.
