I’m in Birmingham, Alabama for work and we stopped at The J. Clyde for dinner and a few beers. I was looking forward to trying a few local brews and had Good People Brewing’s Mumbai Rye IPA from the cask before dinner. When dinner arrived – the beer cheese soup and the Gus Burger – I ordered another local brew from Back Forty Beer Co.
Location: Enjoyed an regular pint glass at The J. Clyde in Birmingham, Alabama
Numbers: 6% ABV, ~ 173 Calories
Ingredients: Malt: Honey malt, Crystal malt, chocolate malt; Hops: Magnum, Willamette; Honey: Alabama Wildflower (Mobile, AL)
Appearance & Aroma: It was a slightly hazy mahogany color with a very thin head on it. There was a nutty-malty aroma with some caramel smells as well.
Taste & Feel: The body was fairly light, and the mouthfeel was a bit crisp. The flavors up front were lightly sweet caramel with a bit of nuttiness. In the middle a bit more of the same accompanied by a bit of a biscuit-like toastiness. It finished with a sweet crispness and the caramel nuttiness crept back in a bit in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: As I mentioned, I had this with my Gus burger (a big cheese burger with a fried egg on it) and fries. It was nicely with my burger, the caramel nuttiness adding some complexity to the flavorful beef, yet a light crispness that helped wash down the hearty meal. I think another great pairing would be fried chicken, however, it was light enough it would go with almost any meal.
Overall Impression: It was very, very drinkable, and went down easily. The caramel and nutty flavors were fairly light, making it easy to drink, especially on a hot evening like it was. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good beer with some lightly complex flavors, which was good for helping to wash down my burger, but left me wanting a little bolder flavors.
