SXSW and New Beers

SXSW 2011As you can tell by my last several posts, I was at SXSW Interactive in Austin, TX. During the 5 days, I got a chance to try several new beers that I could have added to the list. Looking back on my untappd tab, I had Rio Blanco Pale Ale from Real Ale Brewing, Lone Star from Pabst, and several others. However, I promised myself that I wouldn’t post a beer unless I took a picture of it and was able to jot down a few notes about it while sampling it. Unfortunately, the pace of SXSW was pretty crazy, and I either forgot or didn’t get the chance to review these beers.

I will say that the Austin city culture reminds me a lot of Portland, OR.  I’ve also been told by several people that they are similar, especially since both claim the motto of, “Keep Austin/Portland Weird.”  What surprises me though, is that while Portland has such a rich beer culture (perhaps one of the best in the U.S.), and more breweries per capita than anywhere else in the U.S., the beer culture in Austin seems to be a bit lacking.  There are a few local breweries, but not nearly as many as cities like Chicago and St. Louis.  The beers I had from Texas breweries were fairly good, so I’m not sure why there aren’t more of them in Texas or Austin.
