Dogfish Head’s Chicory Stout says that it’s “a rich dark brew smoothed out out with a touch of roasted chicory and organic Mexican coffee goodness and carries a bone white head.” It says that it is 5.2% alcohol by volume.
It looks very very black and has an interesting smell that is hard to describe – slightly like coffee but a bit more of something else I can’t describe. Maybe it’s the chicory, because I don’t know what chicory smells like. It had a decent sized head when I first poured the glass, but it thinned somewhat and left only a frothy creamy ring around the top of the glass.
The taste has a bit more smooth coffee to it, but not necessarily a “roasted” coffee flavor. If I had to guess, I’d say it uses a bit of black patent malt as I picked up that flavor in it. I noticed a bit of a sharp kind of bitterness on my tongue when I drink it, but I think that’s probably from the black patent malt, because it’s not too much of a coffee bitterness.
It’s pretty full and creamy and would be a good one to drink on a late summer night. If I had to drink it with a certain type of food, I’m pretty sure this would go very good with almost any type of BBQ. It doesn’t have a chocolaty flavor, but I think it would probably complement something chocolate.
