98. McMenamins Edgefield – Hammerhead Draft

I arrived in Portland, Oregon for my Travel Oregon Brewmaster Cuisinternship at Full Sail Brewing, and got a recommendation from a friend that lives in the area.  She recommended stopping at McMenamin’s Edgefield Brewery.  Now, if you’ve never been to the area, and/or search on McMenamins, you won’t be entirely sure what it’s all about.  Well, the McMenamins fix up old areas and turn them into tourist spots.  Their Edgefield location has its own brewery, so I decided to stop (along with the recommendation from Rachel Ray on her show, “$40 a day.”  Despite the Powerhouse Pub and Brewery being tremendously busy for a Sunday night, I finally got my beer – a Hammerhead on draft – along with my spinach and artichock dip.

It was a deep copper color, and it had a creamy head which fell qickly.  The aroma was a bit complex – a bit fruity at first, with a sweet smell and a slight hoppiness.  When I finally took a drink, it was light in body and had a slighly malty fruityness and caramel flavor up front.  However, the aftertaste and finish was a big cascade hop flavor that stuck around in my mouth.

It went very well with the spinach and artichoke dip, which had a bit of spiciness with it.  The sweet and then malty flavor took away from the spiciness of the meal.  I will say that the service at McMenamin’s Edgefield Powerhouse Pub was terrible, but the dip and beer were good.  I’ve been told by multiple people that it is a must visit if you get to the Portland area, so check it out and try the beer for yourself.
Great pairing
