When I poured it in the glass, I first noticed the thick creamy, tan head and the heavy amount of carbonation in deep brown colored beer. As it sat there while I wrote the intro to this post, the head actually got quite a bit larger. That doesn’t happen often. Through the large head, I noticed some malty, caramelly smells, as well as a bit of hoppiness.
It had a light-medium body, and was very smooth drinking. I noticed a very nice caramelly maltiness up front, with a bit of roasty bitterness in the finish. While it had a good balance that was more on the malty side, and there was a bit of a hop aroma on the head, I didn’t notice much of a hop flavor in the taste.
This went very well with the BBQ ribs I had for lunch, which were left overs from a friend’s birthday celebration last night (which I got to share a lot of my homebrew at). Overall, I thought this was a fairly drinkable beer – while it had a nice malty flavor up front, it was smooth and the aftertaste was roasty, but light. It was a pretty good beer which I’m glad I got the opportunity to try.
