It’s another fall Saturday, and I spent the morning cleaning up the house and prepping for our upcoming Halloween party. Now I’m watching Mizzou football while it’s raining outside, and thought I’d crack open this beer. I picked it up for a Hawaiian party we had (along with the coconut pictured).
Location: Poured into a snifter style pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 6% ABV, 30 IBUs, 183 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s deep brown, almost black in color with some ruby highlights visible when held up to the light. It has a thin, creamy, khaki colored head on it that had a little bit of retention and lacing. The aroma is almost all mocha-cocoa with some coconut and light coffee undertones.
Taste & Feel: The body is light-medium and the mouthfeel is smooth with a little bit of creaminess from the head. The flavor up front is chocolate-like with some roastiness and coffee. In the middle, the roasted coffee flavors grow a bit and bring a faint bit of bitterness. The finish is mostly cocoa flavors with some coconut and coffee flavors underneath. The cocoa with hints of coffee are what last for a minute or so in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This beer has a lot of chocolate and coffee like flavors and could go with any sort of chocolate dessert, but I think it could also go great with a steak or other BBQ. It might also be great to contrast this with something like Mexican food or a sweet and spicy dish.
Overall Impression: This beer has a good body, mouthfeel and flavor, with a lot of cocoa flavors. While the coconut flavors were there, they were a bit more muted than I was expecting. The cocoa flavors also had some coffee flavors with it, which gave it some nice layers. Overall, I thought it was a good beer, and wish it had a little bit more toasted coconut flavor to it. It’s solid and definitely one I’d buy again, given the right situation.
