On Friday night we rented a steam cleaner for 48 hours, and I spent the entire weekend steam cleaning every inch of carpet, every carpeted stair, and every rug in the entire house. I stopped briefly last night so my wife and I could go to Shakespeare in the park (we saw The Merry Wives of Windsor). So finally, after returning the steam cleaner, it was time for a beer. My friend Joe gave this to me when we met up in Memphis about a month ago. He brought me several beers from down south, including this one from Wild Leap Brew Co. in LaGrange, Georgia.
Location: Poured from the can into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 5.6% ABV, 43.3 IBU, 6.2 SRM, ~180 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s golden in color and has a hint of haze. There’s a good amount of carbonation in it, leaving a quarter inch thick creamy white head that has great retention and lacing. It has a citrusy-grassy hop aroma with a hint of dankness.
Taste & Feel: The body is light medium and the creamy head contributes to a smooth and slightly oily mouthfeel. The flavor up front is citrusy and grassy hop juiciness. In the middle, a light malt sweetness grows to match the hop juiciness. The hops take back over in the finish, with a mix of citrusy-grassy hop flavor and bitterness. The bitterness edges out the flavor by a little bit, even though the bitterness is still fairly light and smooth. The bitterness is what lasts for a minute or so in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This is a lighter, brighter IPA with citrusy and grassy flavors. I think it wouldn’t be too big to pair with a salad or fish dish, but would also be refreshing to enjoy on a hot day with some food right off the grill. – burgers, dogs, or brats.
Overall Impression: This was a light, bright, refreshing beer with smooth citrusy and grassy hop flavors that would be great on a hot summer day. Although it’s called an IPA, it could easily pass for a pale ale, since the flavors and bitterness were lighter and the ABV was 5.6%. Overall, I thought it was a very drinkable beer with a good hop flavor, and I look forward to trying a few more of their brews.
