It’s the start of the Memorial Day weekend and I just got home from work. It’s time for a beer and I have a few IPAs my friend Joe just sent me from Atlanta. I thought the label looked cool and I liked the name, so I thought I’d give it a try. It’s been a bit of a slow week at work, but I’ve been needing to start studying for an insurance exam (exciting huh?) so instead, I grabbed a beer.
Location: Poured from the can into a TEKU style pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 7.3% ABV, 75 IBUs, ~210 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s golden amber in color and is lightly hazy. It has a huge pillowy white head on it that fell to a thin layer over the top after several minutes. The aroma is almost woody with some citrusy smells.
Taste & Feel: The body is light-medium and the mouthfeel is smooth and a bit creamy from the head, but is also lightly oily and a bit crisp from the hops and carbonation. Up front there’s a citrusy flavor and bitterness with the bitterness slightly edging out the hop flavor. In the middle, it becomes sweet with a citrusy hop juiciness with a little bit of earthiness. The bitterness really kicks up in the finish and grows even more bitter in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: I had this hoppy bear with pizza and it was a great pairing. The sweet peppers on the pizze really contrasted nicely with citrus bitterness.
Overall Impression: I enjoyed the citrusy hoppiness that came through in both the flavor and bitterenss, and the juiciness in the middle. This beer definitely showcased the hops, and while it was bitter, it also offered plenty of hop flavors. It was a solid IPA, and it made me want to try more beers from New Realm Brewing Company.
