Location: Poured into a TEKU glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 7.5% ABV, 61 IBUs, 7 SRM, ~220 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s a deep burnt-orange color, and it’s a little hazy. The head has a soapy texture, and fell after a minute or two to just a creamy ring around the edge of the glass. The aroma has a good amount of hoppiness with earthy-citrusy smells with some hints of spiciness.
Taste & Feel: The body is medium and the mouthfeel is smooth with a bit of oiliness from the hops. The flavor up up front is an earthy hoppiness with some juicy hop sweetness. The earthy hop bitterness picks up a little bit in the middle. The finish is a mix of earthy-citrusy hop flavors and bitterness, with both lasting for a minute or so in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: There was a good amount of earthy-citrusy hop flavor and bitterness in this beer, which I think goes nicely with savory meals like a cheeseburger or pizza. I had it with General Tso’s chicken, and it was a great pairing.
Overall Impression: I haven’t heard of this brewery before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m partial to IPAs with more late hop additions, so that you get more hop flavor than bitterness – and this one fit that bill. I liked the earthy citrusy hoppy flavors, as well as the hop juiciness up front. I really liked this IPA, and after having it, would like to try more beers from Cahaba.
