Things are getting shuffled around at work again, so I’m again looking for a new position just barely over a year after getting my current position. So, I haven’t been eating the healthiest… especially with lots of leftover pie and cake from our combination Thanksgiving and birthday party for my son. So after a slice of birthday cake after dinner, I decided to open up another one of the IPAs from my friend Joe. He’s from Atlanta and brought me several beers from down south when we met up in Louisville in June to do the Bourbon Trail. The bottle says, “A Night On Ponce IPA grafts an American ale yeast onto the same malts and hops used in A Night In Brussels IPA. The result is an entirely different beer, which announces its presence with lush notes of citrus fruit before tapering to a clean, dry finish.”
Location: Poured into a large goblet glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 7.5% ABV, 69 IBUs, ~200 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s golden in color with a bit of a copper hue. It has a thin white head on it that fell to a ring around the edge of the glass after a few minutes. It has a nice piney-citrusy hop aroma with a little bit of grassiness.
Taste & Feel: The body is medium-light and the mouthfeel is smooth with a little bit of hop oiliness. There’s a piney-citrusy hop juicyfruit flavor up front with a little bit of sweetness. In the middle, there’s a bit of pine and grassy hop flavor, and the bitterness picks up in the finish. The hop flavors edge out the bitterness by a little in the finish with some piney and citrusy hop flavors with the grassy hop flavors behind it. The hop flavors last for a minute or so in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: With mostly piney and citrusy hop flavors, this would have gone perfectly with the tacos I made for dinner. I think it would be great with any bar food – wings, burgers, pizza, or anything fried.
Overall Impression: I remember having their A Night In Brussels IPA which was a pretty good beer. This was also a very solid beer, although I think I prefer it with a little bit of the Belgian spiciness from that yeast. It had the same juicyfruit flavor and piney-citrusiness, which was a solid flavor that was complemented by bitterness that rose up to meet the hop flavor. Overall, I thought this was a very good IPA, and next time I’m down in Atlanta, I’m going to have to try more of their beers.
