87. Cathedral Square – Iglesia Agave Ale

After a little rain, the sun came back out and it’s again a nice Fourth of July day. A friend from St. Louis told me about another new brewery there called Cathedral Square Brewery. He also told me about this interesting beer they had. The label on the Iglesia Agave Ale says, “This Ale is brewed with three malts, two hop varieties and authentic imported Agave Nectar. Iglesia is Spanish for church and this Ale is blessed from barrel to bottle creating a fiesta anytime.”

When I poured it in the glass, it was a hazy copper color, and it had a nice head.  However, the head fell quick to almost nothing but a ring of bubbles around top of the glass.   It had a sweet malt smell and an aroma that reminded me a bit of honey.

It had a light body and a creamy mouthfeel.  The flavor was a light, sweet, caramelly malt flavor followed by a very toasty flavor.  That toastiness reminded me of New Belgium’s Fat Tire, but there was definitely more of it in this beer.  There was a hint of hop bitterness, but it was mostly a toasty, caramelly malt flavor.

I think those flavors would complement St. Louis style BBQ ribs very nicely.  Overall, I thought this was a pretty good beer, and one I think the toasty flavor would be great sitting on the porch on a cool fall evening.
