869. Sierra Nevada/Boneyard Beer – West Coast-Style DIPA

It’s been a pretty busy weekend. My son had baseball games on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and he has one later today. I’m also in the process of renovating our basement bathroom. So, now that I’m waiting for spackle to dry, I thought I’d crack open a beer. This beer was sent to me by Sierra Nevada to promote their Beer Camp Across the World 12 pack. The can says, “We just love brewing hoppy beers” is the way Oregon’s IPA masters at Boneyard Beer kicked off our collaboration talks. Well, as it turns out, we do, too, so we went all out on this intensely hop-heavy West Coast style Double IPA. It’s bright golden, crisp and brimming with intense citrus and herbal hop flavor, just how we like ’em.”

Location: Poured into a TEKU pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.

Numbers: 8.3% ABV, 65 IBUs, 18.1 degrees Plato OG, 3 degrees Plato FG ~260 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s bright golden in color, with some orange hues. It’s also slightly cloudy, with a good amount of carbonation in it, leaving a thin, but fluffy, white head. The aroma is citrusy hoppiness with a little bit of dankness.

Taste & Feel: The body is surprisingly light-medium for such a big beer. The mouthfeel is a bit crisp from the hops and carbonation, but it’s smoothed out by a bit with hop oiliness. The flavor up front is citrusy with some orange peel and grapefruit hop flavors. In the middle, the hop flavors come together with some citrusy and dank hop flavors mixed with some juicyfruit sweetness. The hop flavors open up a little in the finish, with a mix of citrusy hop flavor and a little bit of piney dankness. The citrusy and dank hop flavors last for a little bit in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: Being a very citrusy DIPA, I’d probably pair this with something cheesy, like a cheeseburger or pizza.

Overall Impression: I enjoyed the hop flavors, which were definitely citrusy like a classic West Coast IPA, but there was a little bit of piney dankness that made it a bit unique. The lighter body for such a big beer surprised me a little bit, but along with the citrusy flavors, it made it a nice, refreshing summer IPA. Overall, it was a pretty good beer, and since it comes in a can, take one or two of these to the beach with you.
