Location: Poured into a large Sam Adams Perfect pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 10.5% ABV, 88 IBUs, 21.5 degrees OG, 2 degrees FG, ~320 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s dark orange and amber in color and really hazy. It has a huge, pillowy, cream colored head that had tremendous retention and lacing. It has a nice citrusy-floral and dank aroma with some grassiness behind it.
Taste & Feel: The body is full and the mouthfeel is mostly creamy with a bit of oiliness from the hops. The flavor up front is citrusy-floral hops with some juciness. The juiciness grows quite a bit in the middle. In the finish, the dank hop flavors come out of the juiciness with a good dose of hop bitterness. The citrusy-floral and dank bitterness lasts for a minute or so in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: I had this beer with crab cakes and it was a great pairing. The hop flavors mixed nicely with the crab, seafood, and bready flavors in the crab cakes.
Overall Impression: This beer has a lot of hop juiciness to it, with mostly citrusy-floral hop flavors and a bit of bitterness. While it had a full body, there wasn’t much of any maltiness detectable in this beer. Also, even though it was called a “3X” IPA, it was a lot like a double or imperial IPA – as I’m not sure what makes it a triple IPA. Overall, it was a pretty good big IPA, especially if you like juicy hop flavors.
