It’s been tough getting back into the swing of things today, Monday. There was a beer club meeting tonight, but had to miss it because I had work to catch up on. Now that I finished it up, I thought I’d crack open this beer and watch the national championship college football game on TV. My sister brought this beer back from her trip to Arizona a few weeks ago. It looked interesting, especially after I had the Peanut Butter Chocolate Milk stout the other night.
Location: Poured into a goblet style pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL
Numbers: 5.7% ABV, ~170 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s black in color with almost no light visible through it. It had a decent dark tan head on it, which fell very quickly to a thin creamy ring around the edge of the glass. It smells like the peanut butter cookies I had a couple weeks ago at Christmas with a hint of roastiness underneath it.
Taste & Feel: The body is light and the mouthfeel is both crisp from the carbonation, and a bit oily. The flavor up front is sweet and roasty chocolaty, but in the middle, the flavor turns a bit metallic. The metallic flavor sticks around in the finish, but sits behind a sort of cardboard-peanut flavor and sweet chocolate roastiness. The flavor in the aftertaste is the roasty-cardboard flavor.
Food Pairing: Since this beer has some weird off flavors, I’d pair it with something chocolaty or with peanut butter to bring out the correct flavors in this beer.
Overall Impression: I will admit that my sister brought me two cans of this beer and after a few drinks, I poured the first beer out. It had such a bad metallic flavor I actually poured it out. I got the second can, hoping the first can I had was just a fluke. The second can is what I reviewed here. It too had a metallic flavor, but not as strong as the first one I had. Other than the weird metallic flavor and cardboard-like peanut butter flavor, the body was too light, and it didn’t have the creaminess or “velvety smooth” texture as promised on the can. Overall, I was not only disappointed by this beer, but turned off enough to pour most of a can down the drain.
