I’m on a mission to make some space in the beer fridge, so I’m doing another review. After the chocolate milk stout I had last night, I found another two in the fridge. I picked this one up during A work trip up to Chicago. I’ve had a couple of beers from Spiteful that were pretty good, so I thought I’d give this one a try, especially with the Chicago connected name. The bottle says it’s batch #27.
Location: Poured into a TEKU pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL
Numbers: 7% ABV, ~220 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s dark black in color, with no light visible through it when held up. It had a very dark brown, creamy head on it, which fell very quickly, leaving only a trace of bubbles around the edge of the glass. The aroma is light, but has a bit of coffee-like roastiness.
Taste & Feel: The body is medium-full and the body is smooth and slightly viscous. The flavor up front is a dark chocolate roastiness, and the middle is even more chocolaty. The finish is more milk chocolate, but still leans toward a darker chocolate flavor with hints of coffee. The aftertaste is mostly dark chocolate with coffee hints.
Food Pairing: With the dark chocolate flavors, I think it would pair with and complement BBQ nicely.
Overall Impression: This beer has a lot of dark milk chocolate flavors, which I really enjoyed. However, it was a bit one dimensional, and didn’t have a very complex flavor. It’s hard not to compare it to the 4 Hands Peanut Butter Chocolate Milk Stout I had last night, which I preferred a bit more. Overall, it was a good beer, especially if you like chocolate.
