To our surprise, school was cancelled today. So I ran back and forth between home and work a couple times to check on the kids and my father-in-law who was watching them. Now that work is finished, I decided to have a beer. I picked this beer up a couple weeks ago when it caught my curiosity at the liquor store. I brewed a peanut butter cup imperial stout once and wanted to see how this one compared.
Location: Poured into a large Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL
Numbers: 7.1% ABV, ~260 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s dark black in color, with some faint brown highlights when held up to the light. It has a huge, creamy, tan head on it, with incredible retention and lacing. It has a roasted dark cocoa aroma with hints of coffee.
Taste & Feel: The body is medium-full and the mouthfeel is smooth and creamy from the huge head on it. It has a semi-sweet milk chocolaty favor up front. It gets a little richer in the middle, and the milk cocoa flavor really opens up in the finish. It really is like a dark chocolate milk flavor, with a hint of chocolate bitterness in the end. The aftertaste is all milk chocolate.
Food Pairing: This beer tastes like dark chocolate milk, so I’d likely pair it with tart fruits, like cherry or raspberry desserts as a contrast.
Overall Impression: I thought this was a great chocolate milk stout… however, I can’t say I tasted any peanut butter in it at all. When I concentrated, I picked up a hint of nuttiness, but not an obvious peanut butter flavor as the label implied. This was a very good beer, and I definitely would have given it a higher rating, had I not felt like it was a little bit of false advertising.
