Today has flown by. Ive gotten a few things done, but now its time to watch the World Series again this evening. I bought this beer last week to compare it to my homebrewed chocolate raspberry imperial stout.
Location: Poured into a teku pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL
Numbers: 9.1% ABV, 24 IBUs, % OG, ~330 Calories
Appearance: It’s hazy and brick-brown in color with a huge tan colored, fluffy head on it that stuck around for a long time. The aroma is a bit artificial chocolate smelling, like a Yoohoo soda with a raspberry jelly-like smell.
Taste & Feel: The body is medium and the mouthfeel is fairly creamy from the big head on it. Up front, there’s a chocolate candy like flavor with some raspberry sweetness with it. The chocolate gets a bit richer in the middle, but the raspberry opens up in the finish. The finish is a bit dry with the raspberry tartness. The aftertaste is primarily raspberry jelly-like with some chocolate candy sweetness in the background.
Food Pairing: With all of the sweet flavors in this beer, it’s a dessert on its own. If I had to pair it, I’d go with something fudgey to get a more authentic chocolate flavor.
Overall Impression: I was really hoping for a rich, decadent beer, and instead, it was a bit like liquid candy. The chocolate flavor was a bit more artificial than milk chocolate-like. The raspberry had a decent sweetness and tartness, but when mixed with the chocolate, it was a bit too candy like. Overall, it was a decent beer, but a bit more artificial tasting than I was hoping for. For the money, I’d definitely go with Schlafly’s Raspberry Coffee Stout instead.
