Location: Poured into a TEKU pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL
Numbers: 6.7% ABV, 61 IBUs, 198 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s reddish in color with some copper highlights, and it’s very clear – although it says it’s unfiltered, and there was a layer of yeast at the bottom. The head fell very quickly to a bright white, fluffly-textured ring around the glass. The aroma is mostly citrusy with some caramel maltiness beneath it.
Taste & Feel: The body is full and the mouthfeel is smooth. Up front, the flavor is malty sweet with a good amount of citrusy bitterness. Both the malty sweetness and citrusy bitterness grow quite a bit in the middle. However, in the finish, the citrusy bitterness overtakes the maltiness and lasts for a minute or two in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This beer has a good amount of maltiness, but is predominantly citrusy bitterness. I like to balance those flavors with a cheeseburger – getting the citrusy bitterness to contrast with the cheese and the savoriness of the burger pulls out the malty flavors.
Overall Impression: I thought it had a solid body, mouthfeel and flavor, and appreciated the malty backbone. I enjoyed the citrusy hoppiness, with more bitterness than flavor. Overall, it’s a decent IPA, and I’d love to try more of their beers. I’ll have to look in the beer fridge and see if my sister brought me any more of their beers.
