779. SoMe Brewing – Whoopie Pie Stout

779. SoMe Brewing - Whoopie Pie StoutMy wife got a work trip to Boston, and we decided to take a beer tour of the city with Boston Brew Tours. After stopping at Sam Adams Brewery Tour and Down East Cider House, we went to  Meadhall for lunch. Since I mentioned to our guide that I like barrel aged imperials, he suggested this beer as one of the six they were offering with the lunch that was paid for with the tour.  The lunch consisted of meatloaf, chicken wings, fries, a salad and hummus.  The food was great and they did have a huge selection of craft beers on tap.

Location: On tap and served in a tulip shaped glass at Meadhall in Cambridge, MA.

Numbers: 6.9% ABV, 25 IBUs, ~230 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s very black in color, and I could barely see some highlights when held up to the light. It had a dense, creamy tan head, which fell after a few minutes to a nice creamy ring around the glass. The aroma was quite milk chocolaty.

Taste & Feel: The body was between medium and full, and the mouthfeel was smooth and lightly creamy.  The flavor up front is like a lightly sweetened dark milk chocolate, which becomes a bit sweeter in the middle with some roastiness to balance it.  The finish was lightly sweet with some dark chocolate flavors stepping in front of the roastiness.  The dark chocolate flavors last briefly in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: This beer has some light chocolate and roasty flavors, making it a very good pairing for the lightly charred chicken wings on my plate.  I’d also pair this with a steak or other well done, grilled meat.

Overall Impression: I think I had a high expectation set of this beer, when the driver said this was his favorite of the beers we could select from.  I thought it was a decent milk-stout like beer, but had the opportunity to be much more flavorful than it was.  I was expecting a nice dessert-like beer, and instead, found the sweetness, roastiness, and dark chocolate flavors to be somewhat light.  Overall, it was a good beer, but don’t expect big, bold, sweet flavors.
