738. Furthermore Brewing – Fatty Boombalatty Belgian White

738. Furthermore Brewing - Fatty Boombalatty Belgian WhiteAs I mentioned in my last couple of posts, I’m at Beer House Chicago and and had a couple of beers from Pollyanna Brewing Co, a new brewery in Lamont, IL. It was still pretty early, so I decided to stick around and have one more beer. Again, I was trying to find something local that I couldn’t find down in central IL. Although Furthermore isn’t quite “local,” it is from just north of Chicago, in Wisconsin. And, with a name like that, how can you resist!

Location: On tap and served in a large, tulip glass at Beer House Chicago in Lombard, IL.

Numbers: 7.2% ABV, ~210 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s golden in color and a bit hazy with a head that fell to a thin, soapy texture, leaving a mild amount of lacing.  The aroma has a good amount of Belgian spiciness and bubblegum smells.

Taste & Feel: The body is medium, and the mouthfeel is lightly crisp. Up front, the flavor is a lightly sweet maltiness mixed with a decent amount of Belgian spiciness. The sweet maltiness turns more bubblegum-like in the middle. In the finish, there’s a good amount of bubblegum sweetness and Belgian spiciness that combine in a balanced fashion. These bubblegum and light Belgian flavors last for a minute or two in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: I’d contrast the bubblegum sweetness and Belgian spiciness with the boldness of a peppercorn spiced steak. The steak would be hearty enough to stand up to the sweetness and the spices would be a good mix with the Belgian flavors.

Overall Impression: This was a very unique beer, and I enjoyed the combination of the sweet bubblegum flavors mixed with Belgian spiciness. It seemed like it was missing the creamy texture from the wheat this style usually contains, but I think that probably allowed the sweetness to match up to the spiciness. Overall, I thought this was a good, unique beer that open-minded beer lovers will probably enjoy.
