Today was my last day of work at State Farm Insurance, so my coworkers took me out for a nice dinner at Epiphany Farms Restaurant. I have some tremendous co-workers, and it was great to get together with them tonight. Of course they know I’m a beer geek, and I haven’t had too many beers from this brewery, so I figured I’d start the evening with this one.
Location: On tap and served in a short tulip style glass at Epiphany Farms Restaurant in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 9% ABV, ~280 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s golden-orange in color and slightly hazy with a thin, white head that barely covered the top, but left some lacing on the glass. The aroma was lightly fruity with some bready light citrusy notes.
Taste & Feel: It has a lighter body than I was expecting for a 9% abv beer, with a light-medium body and a slightly crisp mouthfeel from the carbonation in it. The flavor up front is lightly sweet, and almost bubblegum like with some bready-grainy maltiness. In the middle, some spiciness comes in with some lightly lemony-malty flavors. The finish is fairly dry, with mostly light lemony, citrusy, and malty flavors with some light farmhouse funk and some earthy-grassy hop bitterness. The finish was mostly citrusy with some funkiness in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This is a fairly light beer with a wide variety of flavors. Due to the lightness and lemony-malty flavors, I think it would make a good pairing for a seasoned fish dish.
Overall Impression: This beer was light, but surprisingly complex, with a wide variety of flavors – from bubblegum fruitiness to lemony citrus and funkiness. Even though it was complex, it was very, very drinkable, and was a beer I’m sure would be enjoyable on a hot summer day. Overall, I really enjoyed this beer, and I hope I can get my hands on more beers from this brewery.
