724. Bard’s Beer Co. – Bard’s Gold Original Sorghum Malt Beer

724. Bard's Beer Co. - Bard's Gold Original Sorghum Malt BeerIt’s the start of Labor Day weekend and what better way to kick it off than with a beer. I didn’t look to see what it was before I pulled it out of the beer fridge, otherwise, I might have picked an IPA or something like that. I’m not sure where I got this beer, or how old it is.

Location: Poured into a Stella Artois chalice at my home in Bloomington, IL.

Numbers: 4.6% ABV, 20.5 IBUs, 11 SRM, 155 Calories

Ingredients: Malt: Proprietary malted sorghum; Hops: Imported Hallertauer Magnum, Imported Tettnanger Tettnang; Yeast: German Lager Yeast (Strain #3470)

Appearance & Aroma: It’s golden-copper in color and is crystal clear. The head fell almost immediately, like pouring a cold soda in a glass, but there was a fair amount of carbonation in it. The aroma is sweet and somewhat cider-like.

Taste & Feel: The body is light and the mouthfeel is crisp. It was a bit tough to determine any flavors up front, because of the crispness. There’s a bit of an almost stale-caramel malty flavor in the middle before a noble hop-like semi-spicy bitterness comes in during the fairly dry, somewhat lagery finish. The bitterness lasts briefly in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: It’s light, but it has some caramel maltiness and hop spiciness. It could pair with almost anything, but I’d probably pair it with BBQ ribs or pulled pork sandwich to bring out the caramel flavors a bit more.

Overall Impression: I was expecting something worse, based on my previous experiences with Destihl’s sorghum beer. However, it wasn’t too bad, with some caramel flavors and a good Noble hop bitterness. The light lager-like flavor in the finish adds some grain-based beer authenticity. Overall, it was pretty drinkable, and wasn’t too bad for a sorghum beer.
