701. Logboat Brewing – Mamoot

701. Logboat Brewing - MamootI’m in Columbia, Missouri this weekend for my annual pilgrimage to my alma mater for an alumni golf tournament with my fraternity. Readers of this blog will note that this happens the first weekend in June every year, and it’s also a chance for me to add a few new beers to this list. Readers also know that my first stop is almost always at Booches for burgers and beers. Normally I enjoy a Busch or Stag beer with my burger, but this year I saw they had a new local beer on tap. It’s an English mild from a new brewery in town called Logboat Brewing.

Location: On tap and served in a tumbler style pint glass at Booches in Columbia, MO.

Numbers: 3.6% ABV, 16 IBUs, 18 SRM, ~100 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s dark copper in color, like an aged penny, and it’s somewhat hazy. There’s no head at all, only a slight creamy ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass. The aroma was lightly nutty-malty with a light woody-mossy like smell.

Taste & Feel: The body is light and the mouthfeel is smooth with a slight crispness. The flavors up front are mostly malty with a fair amount of nuttiness, which gets a little spicy and woody-mossy in the middle.  The malty-nuttiness lasts throughout with the woody-mossiness moving to the background in the finish.  There’s also a hint of fruitiness in the very dry finish. The malty nuttiness lasts briefly  in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: This beer was a very good pairing for my Booches burgers, but the malty nuttiness would probably also go nicely with BBQ or other hearty meals.

Overall Impression: This was a unique beer with flavors that I wasn’t expecting.  The maltiness was a bit nuttier than expected, and the spicy and woody-mossy flavors were different.  Once I got used to these flavors, I began to enjoy them.  It’s probably not a beer I’d enjoy all that often (I’m not a huge fan of the style), but this is certainly a unique beer with different flavors. Overall, I’m glad I got a chance to try it, and I look forward to trying their other beers.

My Rating: ★★½☆☆
