As I mentioned in my last couple posts, it’s my daughter’s birthday this weekend. We already had a party for her friends at Chuck E Cheese, followed by a Threadless IPA from Finch’s. Now, we’re having our family party. My sister is in town, and if you follow the blog, you know she and her friends give me a lot of content (i.e. beer) for this blog. So, while she was there (pictured behind the beer), I cracked one open she brought me from her trip to Asheville, NC this past fall.
Location: Poured into a curved pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 6% ABV, 40 IBUs, ~150 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s dark brown in color with some brown highlights when held up to the light. The head was huge, tan, and rocky with incredible retention and lacing. The aroma was some smooth roastiness with hints of cocoa.
Taste & Feel: The body is light-medium, and the mouthfeel is crisp from the good amount of carbonation in it. Up front, there’s a light roastiness with hints of semi-sweet chocolate. The chocolate flavors grow in the middle, but lose a little bit of their sweetness. In the finish, it’s more of a bitter-sweet chocolate flavor with bitter hints of roasty maltiness and coffee. The roasty malt and chocolate flavors last for a minute or two in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: With all the roastiness and chocolate flavors, this beer would pair best with BBQ – pulling from the sweetness of the sauce and the roastiness of the meat char. With all the chocolate flavors in this beer, I think it could also pair with chocolate desserts as well.
Overall Impression: There was a fair amount of chocolate flavor in this beer, ranging from semi-sweet to bitter-sweet. It was very drinkable and enjoyable, and the roastiness and coffee flavors were present, but stayed in the background. Overall, this was a good, flavorful porter, with enjoyable chocolate flavors.
