683. Founders Brewing – Porter

683. Founders Brewing - PorterI’ve been out running errands this evening and now have a chance to chill out. I can’t remember where I got this beer. As I mentioned, we’re getting ready to move, so all the beer from the beer fridge is in boxes out in the garage. I found two bottles of this beer, so I thought I’d continue to lighten the load for moving and have both.

Location: Poured into a curved pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.

Numbers: 6.5% ABV, 45 IBUs, ~160 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: Its dark black in color, and I couldn’t see any light through it when I held it up. The head was thin, tan, and creamy, and fell to just a creamy ring around the edge of the glass. The aroma is light, dark cocoa.

Taste & Feel: The body is surprisingly full and the mouthfeel is smooth and slightly viscous. The flavor up front is light, but it’s like dark cocoa. There’s a bit of roastiness that comes in during the middle, and both the roastiness and the cocoa flavors grow quite a bit in the finish. There’s just a bit of roasty bitterness in the finish, and the cocoa and roastiness lasts for a little bit in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: Maybe it’s been on my mind lately, but this is another beer that would go perfect with BBQ. The dark cocoa and roasty flavors mix perfectly with the char of the meat and sweet, dark, smokey flavors of the BBQ and sauce.

Overall Impression: I’ve admitted before that porters aren’t really my thing, because they tend to have a decent amount of flavor, but not the body to match. This beer is truely an exception to that! The body was full and the mouthfeel was quite viscous, and it reminded me quite a bit of Founders Breakfast Stout with less roastiness and no coffee. Overall, it was a big, hearty porter with lots of cocoa flavors. This is definitely one I’m going to seek out again, next time I’m in the mood for a dark, flavorful beer like imperial stout, but don’t want so much alcohol.
