Location: Poured into a curved pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 6.2% ABV, 63 IBUs, ~170 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s reddish in color with golden highlights, and it’s very clear. It had a decent, rocky white head that fell to just a thin layer of bubbles across the top. The aroma is a mix of piney-resin and floral hops.
Taste & Feel: The body is medium and the mouthfeel is crisp. The crispness makes it hard to taste anything up front, but there was some hop bitterness detectable. There’s some caramel maltiness in the middle peeking out from behind a big resinous bitterness. The bitterness grows in the finish with a strong piney bitterness joining the resiny flavors. These hop flavors last for a couple minutes in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: The right pairing for this beer is a good burger to cut through the bitterness. The piney-resinous hop flavors could also go nicely with a spicy dish, like Mexican, Thai, or cajun food, helping to cut through the spiciness a bit.
Overall Impression: I enjoyed the piney-resin hop flavors in this beer, but I thought the maltiness was a bit too thin. It was a good beer, and for a hop head, the hop flavor was a bit complex and in your face. It had a good amount of hop bitterness, and I thought it could have had a little bit more hop flavor. Overall, it was a pretty good IPA.
