664. Brauerei Beck & Co. – Beck’s Sapphire

664. Brauerei Beck & Co. - Beck's SapphireIt’s bitterly cold here tonight with -20 windchill, so we just settled down to watch some TV in the warmth of the house. It was kind of a rough end of the day at work, so I almost went for the bourbon rather than the beer. However, I snatched this at random from the beer fridge as I came in from work. I think I picked this up this past fall as part of a mixed 6 pack I got on vacation in Florida.

Location: Poured into a slightly curved pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.

Numbers: 6% ABV, ~180 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s bright gold in color and extremely clear. The head fell quickly to just a very thin, creamy layer across the top. The aroma is lager-sulphury with a smell reminiscent of Beck’s in a green bottle.

Taste & Feel: The body is medium and the mouthfeel is smooth and a bit creamy. There’s a wheaty-bready and slightly cracker-like flavor up front. In the middle, the wheat flavors becomes a bit sweet and some hop bitterness enters the picture. It finishes with a very smooth, slightly earthy and spicy hop bitterness. The slightly sweet breadiness lasts briefly in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: I enjoyed this beer with some crescent rolls left over from dinner and the breadiness of the beer went together with it perfectly. However, that’s a little boring. I think this beer would be a great pairing with some spicy Thai food or noodles covered in Sriracha, as the bready-wheaty flavors would help knock down the spiciness a bit.

Overall Impression: For a plain lager, it was actually pretty good. Since the bottle was black, the hop flavors were nice and smooth and the malt flavors seemed fresh. It was extremely drinkable, and although the flavors were light, it was a more flavorful lager than most macro-brews. Overall, I enjoyed it and might have some again on a hot summer day with some spicy foods.
