We’re in St. Louis for the holidays and had to run out and pick up a few last minute Christmas presents for the kids, as well as some things for the party at my dad’s house tomorrow. We stopped at the American Girl doll store in Chesterfield Mall, and then at Sam’s Club. Both were insane, so we stopped at Matador Mexican Restaurant for lunch. It was “happy hour” and Mexican beers were $1 off, so I decided to try this one.
Location: Served in the clear bottle at Matador Mexican Restaurant in Chesterfield, MO.
Numbers: 4.4% ABV, 145 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s extremely clear and bright gold in color. There appears to be almost no carbonation in it, and no head. The aroma is a very light bready, somewhat cracker-like smell.
Taste & Feel: The body is light and the mouthfeel is fairly crisp, despite the lack of apparent carbonation. The flavor up front is light and somewhat maize and cracker like. That transitions to some lager and bready flavors in the middle with some light hop bitterness joining it in the finish. It’s got a crisp, clean finish, and only a slight lingering cracker-like aftertaste.
Food Pairing: It’s a Mexican beer, and really can’t recommend it for much other than Mexican food. The light bready-cracker flavors help cut down on the spiciness of the food. The flavors are also light and delicate enough to balance with a salad as well.
Overall Impression: It’s a straightforward, lightly flavored, crisp, clean beer that’s extremely drinkable. It’s a bit more flavorful that other Mexican beers I’ve had, but the flavors are still very light. If you’re like me, and don’t expect much from Mexican beers (other than something to help tame the spiciness of the food), you may find this one a bit better than the standard. Overall, it was better than your average Mexican beer, although I think I prefer Negra Modelo a bit more.
