My son’s 9th birthday party was last night, and he had three of his friends spend the night. They were up late, so I’m a bit groggy today. We’re cleaning up before the family party tonight, and I took a break and grabbed this out of beer fridge. As I sit here, it’s beginning to flurry outside. I don’t remember where or when I got this bottle, as it may have been on a trip up to Kalamazoo a while ago. The batch number on it is 10175.
Location: Poured into a snifter glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 6% ABV, 1.063 OG, ~180 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s dark black in color, and no light visible through it when I held it up to the light. It’s got a creamy tan head with decent retention and lacing, and a light roasty and cocoa-like aroma.
Taste & Feel: It’s got a medium body, and a smooth mouthfeel. There’s a light roasty, and slightly sweet dark maltiness up front. There are some light cocoa flavors that come out in the middle. During the finish, some dark fruit flavors come through, but the roastiness remains prominent. The roasty malt and cocoa flavors last briefly in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: There are some roasty flavors in this beer, but they are fairly light. It would go good with a steak or burnt ends, since this beer is light and drinkable, and the roastiness would match well with the char on either. It would also be a nice pairing to help wash down a rich chocolate dessert.
Overall Impression: This stout had mostly light flavors, making it smooth and very drinkable. The roastiness was fairly reserved, and I enjoyed the cocoa and dark fruit flavors in the background. Overall, I thought this was a good, drinkable stout with some nice complex characteristics.
