After enjoying a couple beers at dinner at Leon’s Full Service in Decatur, GA, my friend Joe took me to midtown Atlanta to the Taco Mac there. We watched the Cardinals and had a couple of beers. I like the Brewniversity concept, but more importantly, I like the huge number of beers they have on tap, and the nice selection of local craft beers.
Location: On tap and served in a slightly curved pint glass at Taco Mac in midtown Atlanta, GA.
Numbers: 7% ABV, ~210 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s very clear and golden in color with a slight orange hue. There’s almost no head on it, just a thin layer of bubbles across the top, although it left a little bit of lacing as I drank it. The aroma was lite with some pumpkin pie spices.
Taste & Feel: The body was light-medium and the mouthfeel was watery, and slightly crisp from carbonation. The flavor up front was lightly sweet and malty. There were some light pumpkin pie spices with cinnamon and nutmeg that came through in the middle, but the flavor was still pretty light. In the finish, an earthy hop bitterness came through with the spices taking a back seat. The light spices lasted briefly in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This beer was fairly light in both body and flavor, and could probably go with almost anything. Since the flavors were light, you could probably pair it with a more delicately flavor dish, such as fish or other types of seafood.
Overall Impression: For a pumpkin beer, this didn’t seem to have any real pumpkin flavor to it, only some of the spiciness associated with it. Even then, the spices were very light in flavor. The earthy hop bitterness in the finish seemed to contrast a bit with the cinnamon and nutmeg flavors, throwing the flavors off a bit for me. Overall, it was definitely light and drinkable, like a light beer with some thin pumpkin pie spices added. However, I usually like a bit more bold pumpkin and spices in my pumpkin beers.
