614. Wrecking Bar Brewpub – Jemmy Dean Breakfast Stout

Today is my second day in Atlanta, and my friend Joe and I spent most of the day working on his new house. So, as a reward for helping him, he’s promised to take me to a few nice bars and microbreweries tonight. Our first stop is the Wrecking Bar Brewpub. They had some nice sounding brews on the menu, but this seemed to be one of their specialties and it came recommended by Joe. The menu said it contained a cold-pressed Java Vino blend added into the serving tank.

Location: On tap and served in a tumbler style pint glass at the Wrecking Bar Brewpub in Atlanta, GA.

Numbers: 7% ABV, 47 IBUs, % OG, 210 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s black in color, and I couldn’t see much light through it when I held it up. It had a very thin, light tan head on it, that fell to just a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass and didn’t leave much lacing. There was a straightforward, roasty-coffee aroma.

Taste & Feel: The body was medium and the mouthfeel was smooth and somewhat watery. The flavors up front were light, roasted dark malts, which was joined by some coffee flavors in the middle, with some cocoa flavors in the background. The roasty flavors dominated through the finish, when the coffee flavors were also at their strongest. The finish was somewhat dry and the roasty-coffee flavors lasted for a bit in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: Joe and I had the Kale Ale Cheese Fondue, which was very good, but not necessarily a great pairing for this beer. With the roasty and coffee flavors, I think this would have been best with a chocolate dessert or some BBQ burnt ends.

Overall Impression: With the name, it’s hard not to compare it to Founder’s Breakfast Stout, which is a bigger beer with a lot more body. In comparison, this beer felt a bit watery and not as robust as it could be. The roasted malt flavors from the dark malts seemed to stand out more than the coffee flavors, but both were dominate, with some cocoa in the background. I shouldn’t compare it to others so much, as I did love being able to try a locally brewed Atlanta beer and the atmosphere of the Wrecking Bar. Overall, it was a good beer, and a great experience.
