As I mentioned in my last post, I’m in Atlanta, GA, visiting my friend Joe. We’re having a good amount of local craft beer before we hit Athens, GA for the Mizzou-Georgia game on Saturday. I got into town today, and for dinner, we hit Taco Mac, a place that serves wings and has 140 beers on tap. After a couple local beers I wanted from the menu weren’t available, I decided to go ahead and order this one. I’d already had Red Brick’s Brown Ale,
Location: On tap and served in a slightly curved pint glass at Taco Mac-Prado in Atlanta, GA.
Numbers: 6.2% ABV, 61 IBUs, 13 SRM, ~ 200 Calories
Ingredients: Hops: Bravo, Cascade
Appearance & Aroma: It’s deep amber in color with an orange hue when held up to the light. It’s a bit cloudy, and has a thick, somewhat creamy head on it that stuck around for a bit and left decent lacing on the glass. There was a mostly citrusy hop aroma with hints of pine and caramel maltiness.
Taste & Feel: The body is light-medium and the mouthfeel is somewhat smooth. There’s a bit of caramel malty sweetness up front, before the citrusy hop flavors kick in. The citrusy hop flavors carry through the middle, with the malt and lightly boxy-fruity flavors in the background. The hop flavors are joined by a citrusy bitterness in the finish, that lasts for a bit in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This beer primarily has a citrusy hop flavor and bitterness with hints of caramel maltiness. With these flavors, I tend to go with a good cheeseburger, as the malt flavors match nicely with the bun, and the cheese tends to counteract the citrusy hop flavors.
Overall Impression: I thought this had a good amount of hop and malt flavor, although I found some of the flavors in the middle a bit off. The light boxy-fruity malt flavor in the middle reminded me a bit of some homebrewed IPAs I’ve had. It wasn’t bad, but not great either. Overall, I found it so-so, and about halfway through I just wanted to finish it to move on to try another one of the 140 beers they had on tap.
