61. St. Louis Brewery Schlafly – Helles Style Summer Lager Draft

Schlafly Summer LagerI’m finally catching up on my posts, because this weekend I went back to my old college town – Columbia, Missouri – for a golf tournament with some fraternity brothers.  It’s an annual event that I haven’t been able to attend in a couple of years, but I was really excited to be back.  So our first stop was burger joint/billiards hall we used to frequent back in the day (I’ll talk more about it in my next post).  Being close to St. Louis, they had a few Schlafly beers on draft, and after being in the car for about 5 hours, I wanted something nice and light.

When it arrived, it had a nice straw-yellow color, and it had almost no head on it.  There was almost no noticeable aroma from it.

When I took a drink it had a very light body, and was extremely crisp and refreshing.  It seemed to have a very slight sort of bready/yeasty flavor, but other than that, it went down like water.  There was a small hint of hops in the aftertaste, but it was only slightly noticeable.

For me – on a hot, sweaty day, after a 5 hour drive – this was a great beer for the situation.  It was refreshing and went down smooth.  It would be a very good beer to get non-craft brew drinking friends to try.  With it being so light, you could really pair this with just about any food.  Ultimately, this is a pretty good beer for a hot summer day when you need something light and refreshing.
