Thank God it’s Friday! I came home from work today and we had a new stove installed and freshly cleaned carpets. Since I still have to install the microwave, I thought it was time to crack open a beer and check it out. I spotted this one near the middle of the beer fridge, so I dug it out. I can’t remember exactly when or where I got this beer, but it has “10292” on the back, so I’m thinking it may be a year or so old.
Location: Poured into a slightly curved pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 4.8% ABV, 1.048 OG, ~ 160 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s golden in color and fairly clear, with a little bit of sediment floating in it. The head was thin and white, and fell to just a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass. The aroma is pilsner-like with a bit of earthy hoppiness.
Taste & Feel: The body is light and the mouthfeel is crisp. There’s a light lemon-like sweetness up front, right before a spicy, earthy-citrus hop flavor and bitterness kicked in. It finished with a good amount of spicy earthy-citrus hop bitterness and some piney-grassy hop flavors in the background. The hop flavors lasted briefly in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This is a lighter beer with a good mix of spicy, earthy, and citrusy hop flavors. I think this mix would pair nicely with a summer salad, adding even more complexity to a mix of greens. The earthy-citrusy flavors would also mix nicely with a lightly buttered fish dish as well.
Overall Impression: It was a cool summer evening, but this light, crisp beer went perfectly with the evening. It had some enjoyable, complex hop flavors, and yet it was very drinkable and refreshing. Whether it’s a cool evening like this one, or a hot day, it’s a nice summer beer either way. It has just the right amount of hop flavor and complexity that it’s flavorful, but still very light and drinkable. Overall, I thought this was a good summer beer.
