585. Bad Weather Brewing - Ominous

I’m up at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN for a checkup on my heart, and we took a break for lunch. We found a place down the street called McGoon’s Taxi Co. Restaurant and Pub and had some lunch. I was happy to see they had a local craft beer on tap, so I had to give it a try.

Location: On tap and served in a regular pint glass with a Minnesota Twins logo at McGoons Taxi Co. Restaurant and Pub.

Numbers: 7.5% ABV, 40 IBUs, ~230 Calories

Ingredients: Malts: American & British Pale, Caramel, Belgian; Other: Oats, Candied Sugar; Hops: American Hops

Appearance & Aroma: It’s dark brown in color, almost black, with some dark brown and ruby highlights when I held it up. There was a finger-thick, creamy, cream-colored head that fell after a little bit. There was a nice, nutty, slightly roasty aroma to it.

Taste & Feel: The body was medium to full and the creamy head added to a slightly creamy mouthfeel. There was a sweet nuttiness up front, which grew into the middle. That’s when a roastiness came in and overtook the nuttiness. The finish was mostly roasty and the roasty flavors lasted for a minute or so in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: I had the chicken taco salad for lunch, and this beer went fine with it. However, I think it would have gone much better with a heartier dish like steak or BBQ. Given the nutty sweetness and roastiness, I would have love to have a pulled pork sandwich with this beer.

Overall Impression: This beer had a good mix of of nutty and roasty flavors, with the roasty flavors slightly winning in end.  The brewery calls this a “Midwest Warmer,” and I’d classify it as a strong american brown ale. It was a nice, flavorful beer, but as for a “warmer,” I think it should have had a bit more alcohol warmth to it. Overall, I found it to be a petty good beer, and it made me want to try more beers from Bad Weather Brewing.
