It’s Friday night and we’re at one of our usual favorites – Flinger’s Pizza Pub in downtown Bloomington, IL. I was looking for something I hadn’t had yet, and this one fit the bill. I’ve also found that I tend to like IPAs and other heavily hopped beers here, because they go nicely with our old standby – the tomato-basil cheesebomb.
Location: On tap and served in a regular pint glass Flinger’s Pizza Pub in downtown Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 9.1% ABV, 80 IBUs, 22 degrees Plato, 273 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s very clear and golden orange in color with a thin, creamy head. The aroma is primary citrus hops with grapefruit and honeysuckle with hints of honey maltiness.
Taste & Feel: The body is solid with a smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel. The flavors up front are bready and malty, but it’s only detectable for a second before the citrus hop flavors kick in. The grassy-grapefruity citrus flavors grow in the middle and it finishes with a good dose of citrus and juicyfruit flavor and bitterness. The citrusy bitterness lasts for a few minutes in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: The hoppiness of this beer did go nicely with the tomato-basil cheesebomb we enjoyed at Flinger’s, with the citrusy hop flavors complementing the sweet basil. I also like a thick, juicy burger with this type of beer, as the bun goes with the bready maltiness and then the hops kick in with a nice dose of citrusy flavors.
Overall Impression: This beer had a nice look and aroma, and delivered with a nice bready maltiness before the big citrusy hop flavors delivered what you’d expect from an imperial IPA. I enjoyed the combination of hops used to give it the flavor and bitterness it had. When I had the barrel aged version, it was a little bit too oaky, but I can definitely see the flavors mixing nicely in the right balance. Overall, I enjoyed this flavorful IPA with enjoyable citrusy hop flavor and bitterness.
