Tonight we decided to try a new place out for dinner – at least new to us, since we haven’t been there yet – and we went to Joe’s Station House Pizza Pub here in town. When we got there, I was thrilled because the waitress said they had Bell’s Hop Slam on tap. Unfortunately, she was wrong, and the rest I had to choose from were fairly limited. So, I decided to go for the Fat Tire on draft.
When it arrived it had a nice, fairly thick, creamy, tan head with some nice lacing on the glass. It was pretty clear and was a perfect amber color. The aroma was nice and bready, and a bit malty.
The body is light and it has a crisp mouthfeel. The flavors were a slightly sweet bready maltiness, with a small hint of toastiness. Although it was pretty cold, it seemed to have less taste to it than I remember the bottled version having. However, it is a very drinkable and refreshing beer.
It went great with the pizza we had, and would go great with just about any type of bar/pub food. Overall, this is a pretty good and refreshing beer. It’s been a good one for introducing friends and family to what craft beer can be. Although the bready toastiness didn’t quite come through in the draft version, I wish I could find out what it is that seems to add that flavor to their beer (yeast? malt? anyone?). I’m certain I’ll have a Fat Tire in the bottle sometime soon, but I won’t do a separate review.
