We’re at our usual spot this Friday evening – Flinger’s Pizza Pub in downtown Bloomington, IL. As I’ve mentioned before, with each beer, we get a free slice of pizza (which we give to the kids). We love the tomato-basil cheesebomb, and it tends to go great with some hoppy beers. Also, since this is my one beer for the week, I figured I’d go big with this one. I had the Oak Aged Unearthly last year at the local beer festival, so I knew a bit of what to expect from this one.
Location: Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass from the growler at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 9.5% ABV, 285 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s clear and golden-orange in color, with almost no head. It just had a ring of bubbles around the edges of glass and a piney, earthy-citrusy hoppy aroma.
Taste & Feel: The body was solidly medium and the mouthfeel was somewhat smooth. There was a sweet honey flavor up front with a bit of booziness apparent for a brief moment before the big earthy, piney-citrusy hop flavors take over in the middle. The hop flavors and bitterness grows in the finish, and lasts for a minute or two in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: As I mentioned, hoppy beers like this go nicely with the tomato-basil cheesebomb here at Flinger’s, since the hop flavors mix well with the cheese and basil flavors. Other good pairings would probably be a thick, juicy cheeseburger to contrast the flavors, or a pasta with white sauce and red & yellow peppers to compliment it.
Overall Impression: This is a very big, hoppy beer with hop flavors that are bold and last for a while. I enjoyed being able to pick up on the honey and boozy flavors up front with each sip, but for the most part, it’s all hops. If you’re a hop-head, you’re really gonna like this beer, as the hop flavors mixed earthy, piney, and citrusy hop flavors and bitterness nicely. Overall, I enjoyed the mix of hop flavors and would recommend this to other hop heads like me.
