After stopping at Flinger’s Pizza Pub for a Green Flash West Coast IPA and a couple of pizza rolls, I headed to our homebrew club meeting at Fat Jack’s. I looked to see what was on the menu I hadn’t had yet, and this one caught my eye. I’d seen it at the liquor store, and heard good things about it, so I thought I’d give it a try since it was on draft.
Location: On tap and served in a curved glass at Fat Jack’s in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 7.6% ABV, 20 IBUs, 225 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It was a bit hazy and golden in color with a good amount of carbonation in it. The head was somewhat thick when it was first poured, but feel to a thin layer of bubbles on the top. The aroma had a spicy Belgian smell with some citrus and floral notes.
Taste & Feel: The body was light-medium and the mouthfeel was crisp from the carbonation in it, which made it tough to tell the flavors up front. There was a little bit of sweet honey and bready sweetness, followed by some more sweetness that had some honey, citrusy, and fruity flavors. In the finish, there was a mix of these flavors with some Belgian spiciness and a hint of citrusy, floral bitterness coming through. The sweetness and spiciness lasted for a minute or so in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This had a lot of flavors going on, but there was plenty of sweetness with honey, citrus, spiciness and more. It was light enough it would complement a summer salad or fish dish, but it was also big and flavorful enough to match up to a thick, juicy, burger.
Overall Impression: I thought it was a very nice, very drinkable, beer. The aroma and flavor was very complex with a wide mix of classic Belgian smell and flavor. Overall, the combination of complex smells, flavors, and drinkability made this a very good beer that I’ll have to get again.
