534. SanTan Brewing – Sex Panther Double Chocolate Porter

A month or so ago I got a Rail Slide Imperial Spiced Ale from SanTan Brewing in the mail. So couple of weeks ago, I got this beer in the mail from them. I love the name and graphic on the can, on which it says, “Sex Panther is a silky smooth Double Chocolate Porter brewed with Colonial Rosewood Cocoa and large amounts of Chocolate malt for a huge chocolatey flavor with hints of truffle and molasses. White wheat is added to give Sex Panther a smooth, creamy head that lasts all night!”

Location: Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass from the can at my home in Bloomington, IL.

Numbers: 6.9% ABV, ~ 210 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s black in color with some ruby highlight where the light shines through. The head fell almost immediately, and even with the etched bottom in the glass, there were very small groups if tiny bubbles on the top. The aroma was roasted malt with hints of dark chocolate and molasses.

Taste & Feel: The body was somewhat light and the mouthfeel is mostly smooth with a slight crispness. The flavor up front is semi-sweet chocolate maltiness, which grows in the middle, and is joined by some dark chocolate and light molasses flavors. The dark chocolate flavors become their boldest in the somewhat dry finish. The aftertaste is a nice, dark chocolate flavor that sticks around for a minute or two.

Food Pairing: This has a lot of dark chocolate flavors in it, and I think it would go nicely with a steak or BBQ, as the dark cocoa flavors would mix nicely with some slight char on the steak, or slightly sweet BBQ sauce.

Overall Impression: The first few sips of this beer were OK, but as I continued to drink it, the flavors really started to grow on me. In particular, I found the aftertaste to be really nice, almost as if I had just finished eating a piece of dark chocolate. There was a slight bit of alcohol warmth which joined the aftertaste after a minute or two, which was really nice as well. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good beer with some really nice dark chocolate and cocoa flavors.

My Rating:
