Like the other Pennsylvania Brewing Company beers I’ve had, this one was given to me by my dad and sister after their trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They stopped at Penn brewery for dinner, and bought me a few beers. When my sister told the waiter about my blog, he gave her a few extra beers for me, including this one. So, as we get our first few inches of snow this year, accompanied by 50 mile-per-hour winds outside, I’m just glad I have heat and power and this beer.
Location: Enjoyed in a curved glass from the 22oz bottle at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: ~ 8% ABV, ~ 240 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s bright golden in color and very clear with a good amount of carbonation in it. The carbonation leaves a fluffy white head with some nice lacing on the glass. The aroma has a little bit of breadiness along with a light earthy pinyness
Taste & Feel: The body is medium and the mouthfeel is creamy at first, from the fluffy white head, then it becomes fairly crisp. It’s got a bit of a light, bready flavor up front and a little bigger pilsner malt, bready flavor in the middle. It finishes with a good amount of noble hop bitterness, and the earthy-piney hop flavor lasts for a little bit in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This beer was light enough in flavor that it could go with almost anything, but I think the flavors would go nicely with bready, but flavorful foods like burgers or pizza.
Overall Impression: I thought this was a very drinkable, and never would have guessed it was an imperial pilsner. It was mostly smooth, with a bit more hoppiness in the finish than I was expecting in a pilsner. However, I enjoyed the hop flavors and thought it was a pretty good beer. Hopefully they’ll offer this again sometime.
