I looked into the beer fridge and thought I’d dig around a little bit. I found a mixed six pack of beers I picked up on a work trip to New Orleans several months ago. This one looked most interesting, so I thought I’d give it a try. The bottle says, “Inspired by old world brewing methods, this bewitching all malt brew is a darkly rich, exotic lager, crafted with a touch of magical New Orleans spirit.”
Location: Poured into a slightly curved pint glass from the bottle at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 5% ABV, 160 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s deep brown in color, and slightly hazy with a thin, off-white head, that fell to just a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass. It’s got a roasty caramel malt aroma.
Taste & Feel: The body was medium and it had a smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel. There was a bready and sweet toasty caramel flavor up front that grew in the middle. it finishes with a good amount of toasty caramel sweetness, with hints of nuttiness and earthy hops.
Food Pairing: This beer had a good amount of caramel sweetness, highlighted with toastiness. Since it’s a New Orleans beer, I think it would go very good with a spicy Cajun dish, as the sweetness would help to balance out the spiciness of the food. In particular, this would go great with gumbo or jumbalaya.
Overall Impression: This beer had a good amount of flavor in it, with a good mix of toastiness, caramel sweetness, and complementary background flavors. It was flavorful, yet very drinkable, and it went down pretty quickly. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good beer, especially for those spicy New Orleans style meals.
