This bottle says, “It all comes down to this. We love making beer. And while our mainline beers keep us very busy, there are times we get antsy to brew something different. That’s where the 471 small batch comes in. Special ales that originate in our brewmaster’s head and then become reality. On occasion, an ale will get enough attention that deal bottle of batch. So keep an eye out for them. Oh Lordy this is fun.” It also says that it is 9.2% alcohol by volume.
It poured an amber color and was cloudy from yeast sentiment in the bottle. It had a pretty thin head and a very thin ring of bubbles remained around the top of the glass. The aroma was full on hops with a tiny amount of malt. Mostly it was a grassy and citrusy hop aroma.
It had a medium body and was smooth. I didn’t taste much of a malty flavor, it was very much a citrus and earthy hop flavor. The finish had a quite nice hop bite to it which lingered in my mouth for quite a while afterward.
I was surprised by the strength of the hop aroma and flavor, given the fact that it was over a year old. It was still a very good beer, but it’s definitely a hop bomb. I can’t really recommend enjoying this beer with a food, since your taste buds will be knocked out by the hop bitterness. While I like this beer and its hop flavor, it is a rare treat, since this stuff goes for $14 a 6-pack here.
