387. Lazy Magnolia – N’awlins Golden Ale

Lazy Magnolia - Nawlins Golden AleI’m in the Big Easy for a couple days for work, and we walked down to the French Quarter looking for a place to eat.  We stopped at the Riverfront Restaurant.  The waiter mentioned they had a beer on tap from Lazy Magnolia brewed especially for New Orleans. So, I had to try it.

Location: Enjoyed a pilsner glass, at Riverfront Restaurant in New Orleans, LA.

Appearance & Aroma: It was slightly hazy and was golden in color with some orange hues.  There was almost no head on it, and there was a bready, malty aroma with hints of light caramel sweetness.

Taste & Feel: The body was fairly light and the mouthfeel was crips.  There was a light malt sweetness up front, continuing through the middle where a slight citrusy-orange flavor comes in.  The finish was slightly bitter with the citrus flavors becoming a bit earthy.

Food Pairing: Being in New Orleans, I ordered an alligator po-boy, and this beer went perfectly with it.  The citrus flavors in the beer really added to the flavors of the breaded alligator meat.  The citrusy flavors would probably also go nicely with other breaded seafood po-boys, from shrimp to crawfish.

Overall Impression: I found this beer to be fairly drinkable, light and crisp with light citrusy flavors.  However, I thought it was a bit overly sweet up front and in the middle.  If the sweetness was dialed back a bit, this would be a very good summer beer.
