383. Destihl Restaurant & Brew Works – Antigluten Double Pale Ale

Destihl Restaurant & Brew Works – Antigluten Double Pale AleAs I mentioned in my last post, we stopped at Destihl Restaurant & Brew Works after a stressful trip to the holiday photography studio.  After a full, hearty beer, I thought I’d go with something a bit lighter.  I saw this on the menu and thought it might be interesting to try a gluten free beer.

Location: Enjoyed a pint glass, at Destihl Restaurant & Brew Works in Normal, IL.

Numbers: 6% ABV, ~ 180 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It was very clear and had a golden straw-like color.  There was a very thin head on it with a very slightly bready-grainy aroma with hints or rye.

Taste & Feel: The body was very light and the mouthfeel was fairly smooth.  There was a slight piney-earthy bitterness up front followed by a bit of cardboard like graininess.  There were hints of cardboard and plastic in the finish, disguised a bit by a very healthy dose of piney-earthy bitterness.

Food Pairing: This went very nicely with our order of beer battered asparagus, as the hoppy flavors mixed nicely.  The breadiness of the beer battered coating helped to bring out the flavors in the excellent sauce the dish was coated with.

Overall Impression: To be honest, I haven’t had many gluten free beers, so I don’t know exactly what sorghum tastes like.  If this is any indication, I won’t have many more gluten free beers.  To me, they tried to cover up the flavors with a decent hop addition, but the cardboard and plastic flavors of the sorghum came through.  While I’m glad I can say I’ve tried a gluten free beer, you can bet I won’t be ordering many if given the choice.
