370. Boulder Beer Co – Buffalo Gold Premium Ale

Boulder Beer - Buffalo GoldIt’s our last night in Boulder, Colorado, on a trip for work, and we headed down to Pearl Street to walk around.  It had been a long day, so we stopped at The Lazy Dog sports bar for dinner and a much needed beer.  There were only a couple beers on the menu I hadn’t had yet, and I wanted something very drinkable, so I went for this light blonde “premium ale” from Boulder Beer Co.

Location: Enjoyed a pint at The Lazy Dog in Boulder, Colorado

Numbers: 4.95% ABV, 12.5 Plato OG, ~ 150 Calories

Ingredients: Malts: U.S. Light Caramel Malt, U.S. 2-Row; Hops: Nugget, Willamette, Cascade

Appearance & Aroma: It was very clear and, true to its name, golden in color.  There was almost no head on it, only a very thin ring of bubbles around the edges.  There was also almost no smell to it, only some very slight cracker-like aromas with a slight bit of floral-like hops.

Taste & Feel: The body was very light, almost watery, and there was a slight bit of crispness to the mouthfeel.  The flavors up front were lightly sweet with some malty and light grainy-bready flavors. in the middle.  The finish was clean and crisp, leaving a little bit of bready maltiness in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: This is so light that it would go with almost anything.  I had this with a huge nacho platter and it helped to wash them down, as well as the spiciness from the jalapeno peppers.  If you’re eating something rich and flavorful, this beer would be good to help wash it down and cleanse the palate between bites.

Overall Impression: This is a very light and drinkable beer, and would definitely be considered a transition beer – meaning that it would be one to help get macrobrew light beer drinkers to switch over to a microbrew or craft beer.  Most craft beer drinkers might find it a bit too light and want more flavor.  However, it’s very drinkable and would be a good one on a hot summer day.
