351. Yazoo Brewing – Dos Perros Ale

Yazoo Brewing Dos Perros AleMy wife is gone for the weekend and while my kids sit and watch a movie, I decided to grab a beer and relax after an afternoon at the children’s museum. I wasn’t exactly sure what this beer was, but it was given to me by my friend Joe, who liked it, and I thought I’d give it a shot.

The label says, “Many Mexican beer styles today are descendents of old Austrian styles. When Austria ruled Mexico in the late 19th century. Our Dos Perros is made with Munich, English, and chocolate malts, flaked maize, and Pearle and Saaz hops.

Location: Enjoyed the bottled beer, in a Sam Adams perfect pint glass, at home in Bloomington, IL.

Numbers: 3.5% ABV, 21 IBUs, 13 SRM, 10.4 Plato OG, 3.3 Plato FG, ~ 140 Calories

Ingredients: Includes, malts: Munich, English, Chocolate; hops: Pearle and Saaz

Appearance & Aroma: It was clear and had a deep brown color. There was a finger-thick, cream-colored, creamy head that stuck around for a bit, but didn’t leave any lacing. The aroma was a bit like dark chocolate and coffee.

Taste & Feel: There was a crisp mouthfeel, and the body was light-medium. There was a bit of a bready, lightly sweet chocolate flavor in the middle, followed by a chocolate and slightly coffee-like flavor in the finish. I couldn’t really taste a hop flavor, as the bitterness in the finish mixed with the coffee flavors, giving it a bit of a watered-down coffee like bitterness.

Food Pairing: This was a bit of a confusing one for me.  Maybe it’s the Mexican flare of this beer, but I guess I’d pair it with spicy Mexican food.  The bready, light chocolate, and watered-down coffee flavors would help to cut the spiciness, and might add an additional layer of flavor complexity to the food.

Overall Impression: I wasn’t sure what to expect from this beer, and it was definitely different.  The aroma left evidence of a flavorful beer, but the ABV indicated that it was a session beer.  It was very drinkable, and it had a little more flavor than most session beers.  However, I felt that the light flavors were a bit of a tease, and it felt a bit watered down in the follow through.  I’m not opposed to light session beers, but the lighter flavors left me wanting something a bit more bold.

My Rating: ★★½☆☆
