As I mentioned in my last post, I tried the Tallgrass Halcyon Unfiltered Wheat, and was looking for lighter beers because it’s HOT outside. Not only did my friend Joe give me the Halcyon Wheat, but he gave me this beer from Ska brewing (both of which are top ranked beers on GoodBeerFest’s list of top 10 canned craft beers for summer). He promise me it was of much better quality than Corona.
Location: Enjoyed the canned beer, poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass, at home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 4.2% ABV, 18 IBUs, 4 SRM, ~115 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It was pretty clear, and was bright yellow in color with a thin creamy head. There was plenty of carbonation in it. There was a light bready-lager aroma.
Taste & Feel: The body was light, and it had a crisp mouthfeel, with a bit of carbonation bite. There was a light bready lagery flavor in middle, with more of a bready-yeasty flavor in the finish. There was a Saaz hop bitterness in the finish as well.
Food Pairing: This was a light beer, and would probably go good with many foods. I think the bready flavors would go well with fried foods, but given the name, it would also go nicely to help tame some spicy mexican dishes.
Overall Impression: As expected, this was a lighter beer. However, it was obvious that this wasn’t a watered down beer made with rice. It had a good, almost pilsner-like, bready maltiness, and the Saaz hops flavor in the finish added a nice bit of bitterness. The flavors proved the quality of the beer, but it was very drinkable, and went down very easily. Don’t let the name make you think you’re getting something watery, like a Corona. It’s a good drinkable beer for a hot day.
